Training programmes.

Why have a Training programme ?

When we start off on our training journey simply by getting in the pool , on the bike and out for a run often appear to suffice us in putting a foot on the fitness ladder and making improvements. Unfortunately sometimes even at this early stage pitfalls are met with over exuberance and lack of understanding that can lead to long and painful injuries which dull the appetite for the sport before even having chance to kick off.

Having successfully negotiated the first stage of introducing ourselves to training we arrive at the next stop where we are looking to make improvements but where and how is this best done with the time I have available, I am busy with work, family, studies how do I best use that time. Does it matter what I do when ?

This is the stage where we are looking to soak up information and maximise improvements.  This is where a certain amount of knowledge can be very dangerous. Taking ideas randomly and throwing them in the melting pot leaves a great deal to chance. The scenario of taking two identical sets of sessions for a week and giving them to an athlete. Having the sessions set out in two different weekly structures will have two different training effects. How the menu is put together is how it maximises its positive impression. Another major pitfall is never appropriately addressing our weaknesses as we enjoy working with our strengths. Those already from specific backgrounds trying to fit the once tried and trusted running training into a cross training programme.

Once through this stage we generally have gained some individual success that has personally been positive and set against achievement or personal individual goals. Its often at this time we begin to feel this is easy I can work this training lark out for myself. For many unfortunately this is when the real expertise of a good quality coach can kick in with their high level of experience and look at the detail of small but significant improvements that become the satisfaction markers of those athletes reaching nearer to their ultimate potential. Is this a good time to fly solo ?

Expense is always a marker as we look at maximising performance. A simple guide is some of the expense we can justify on a bike whether it is £500,£1000,£2000 or more and by spending 10% less  to invest on looking the best you can on your new stead. Or taking your average kit, entries, travel spend annually for Triathlon  and looking at 10% of that being put into getting the most from the time effort expense and energy that you are putting in. Knowing when you go out the door you are doing what is best.

Being coached is not for everyone but it takes a very special individual who can honestly maximise their performance working on their own. Certainly less than 10% of the athletic population. Triathlon is a very popular growing sport and with that there are increased markets for experts (coaches) to ply their trade. The growth of the internet and online coaching has opened up new avenues for the profession so the options are far wider. On the negative side there is having to pick through as with everything the good from the bad. How do you make that judgement and on what basis ?
